Description
Tall and spectacular, award-winning Filipendula rubra 'Venusta' - aptly named Queen of the Prairie - is an impressive native perennial with huge, pink feathery plumes atop 4-8' stems of deeply cut, rich green leaves. Think cotton candy in flower form! I first saw it during a garden tour at Brigham Hill Farm in North Grafton and my jaw dropped. A stand of Queen of the Prairie in full bloom is truly a sight to behold. This is one of those plants that will have everyone who sees it asking you about it. PLUS...it's an absolute magnet for butterflies and other pollinators. Blooms mid to late summer. You want it, right?
Now, for the caveats. This plant grows tall, and it spreads by underground stolons. It needs a place to grow in your garden where it won't out-compete other, more well-mannered plants (or where you can mow it to keep it in bounds). It prefers full sun or part shade and moist soil, and will even grow in standing water, so it should be watered regularly during dry spells where needed. Although I've never tried this, it could potentially be grown in a *large*, deep pot with no drainholes (to retain water). If you have the right spot for this Queen, she will reward you royally.
